🫧 One competitor did something kinda evil (and it worked)

The No Barrier Reef 🪸

Hey Reader,

Last week I posted three things on LinkedIn that got people arguing in my DMs.

One was about a competitor gaming the review system.
One was about why complicated pricing kills conversions.
And one was about finally automating the part of my work I've been avoiding for years.

Here's what's worth your time:

WHEN YOUR PRICING TABLE NEEDS A SCROLL BAR, YOU'VE ALREADY LOST

Exhausted merchants don't compare seven tiers. They bookmark your app and never come back.

Complicated pricing signals indecision. It says you haven't figured out who you're for or what matters.

Two, maybe three tiers. That's it.

THE COMPETITOR SHIPPING BUGS ON PURPOSE

A Shopify app competitor went from zero to position #2-3 in one year by intentionally shipping visual bugs.

Why? Every bug creates a support ticket. Every support ticket becomes a review opportunity.

Stable apps don't get support contacts. So they don't get reviews.

It's kinda evil. And it worked.

I TAUGHT CLAUDE TO THINK LIKE ME (SO I DON'T HAVE TO)

My bottleneck was never analysis. I know what matters in three seconds.

It was reporting. Overthinking format. Rewriting the same insights ten different ways.

After five sessions teaching Claude my thinking process, it handles reporting exactly how I'd do it.

I still do the thinking. It just handles the part I hate.

Have you seen competitors pull shady tactics like this in your category?

The No Barrier Reef 🪸 Hey Reader, You built the app. Launched it. Optimized the listing. Page 3 of search results. Watching apps with hundreds of reviews rank above you. You need reviews to get visibility. You need visibility to get installs. You need installs to get reviews. Chicken and egg. Most founders think better listing copy fixes this. Better keywords. Better screenshots. It doesn't. The App Store rewards apps that already have momentum. Waiting for it to send you customers? You're...

The No Barrier Reef 🪸 Hey Reader, Your app is live. The code is clean. Features are solid. Everything works. Now what? Most founders think this is when users start flooding in. They won’t. Your first users aren’t waiting in the magical app store queue. They’re busy running their stores, dealing with real problems, not browsing for solutions they don’t know exist. Bummer, eh? Here’s how you do it: Find them where they’re already talking Reddit. Facebook groups. Shopify forums. Search for...

The No Barrier Reef 🪸 Gideon called me earlier today. We've worked together for years. He knows his stuff. But it was stuck on page 3 of the App Store search results. "I've tried everything," he said. "Better screenshots. New description. Nothing moves the needle." I pulled up his listing while we talked. Then I saw it. "You're using 'chatbot' in your title?" "Yeah, of course. That's what we build." "Check your top competitor." He paused. "They use 'chat bot.' Two words." One space. That's...
